The Latvian national team, seeded fourth and represented in this tournament by last year’s European vice-champions in the U-17 group Toms Markus Salnājs, Jānis Censonis, Edvards Egle and Kristiāns Artis Pastors, defeated Ukraine (12th) by 21:15 in group D.
Censonis scored ten points, Pastors five, Egle four and Salnājs two, but Bohdan Malihs was the top scorer for the Ukrainians with six points.
Latvia will also meet Israel on Friday.
It has already been reported that on Thursday Latvia defeated Kyrgyzstan (5th) with 22:10 and India (13th) with 21:13.
The winners of the first two places in the subgroup will fight for medals in the knockout tournament on Sunday. In the quarter-finals, the best teams in Group D will meet the first and second place winners in Group B (Brazil, Estonia, Morocco, Serbia and Slovenia).
In the U-18 World Cup, the best achievement of Latvian basketball players so far has been the fifth place in the men’s competition in 2022 and the sixth place in the women’s tournament in 2021.
