Latvia supports the consolidation of Palestinian statehood through bilateral negotiations

The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that, in accordance with the common position of the European Union (EU), Latvia supports a peaceful two-state solution in accordance with internationally recognized parameters based on the 1993 and 1995 Oslo agreements, as well as the 1967 border.

“The current escalation once again confirms the need to look for a lasting solution to the conflict based on the principle of two states. Palestine is currently recognized by 138 countries of the world, including 9 EU members, but this has not allowed a solution to the conflict to be reached. Therefore, we primarily support negotiations between the two sides as the best way to two states solutions and the strengthening of Palestinian statehood,” emphasized Eglīte.

In the opinion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is important to stop the current escalation of the conflict, as well as to provide support to the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Authority, which is one of the central elements of the future State of Palestine. According to Eglīte, this approach is also supported by the EU and the majority of its member states.

As reported, the Prime Minister of Norway, Jūnas Gaar Stere, emphasized that Norway is ready to recognize the Palestinian state together with other countries. He stated that such a decision would be acceptable in closer coordination with “like-minded countries”.

Last November, the Norwegian parliament accepted the government’s proposal that the country is ready to recognize an independent Palestinian state.

Spain is also “committed to recognizing Palestine as a state as soon as possible, when the conditions are right and in a way that would have the most positive impact on the peace process,” said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

It has already been written that in the massacre organized by the Palestinian group “Hamas” in Israel on October 7 of last year, terrorists murdered about 1160 people, mostly civilians, and took about 250 hostages. Some of the hostages have been released.
