Latvia Supports Moldova’s Accession Negotiations: UN General Assembly Meeting

During the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York today, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with Moldovan President Maija Sanda, stressing that Latvia supports the start of accession negotiations with Moldova already this year.

As LETA agency was informed by the adviser of the President Mārtiņš Drēģeris, the presidents of Latvia and Moldova discussed bilateral cooperation between the two countries, Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and cooperation between the two countries in international organizations.

During the meeting, Rinkēvičs confirmed Latvia’s interest in continuing to cooperate with Moldova in development cooperation projects and praised Moldova’s resilience in relation to Russia’s hybrid threats against Moldova.

The President of Latvia expressed satisfaction with Moldova’s cooperation with Ukraine, ensuring grain transportation to the EU.

Rinkevičs called on Moldova to adapt to the EU sanctions framework, thereby preventing Russia’s efforts to circumvent the sanctions regime.
