Latvia Sees Record Increase in Electric Car Registrations in 2023, but Lags Behind EU Support Programs

Thus, in 2023, the registration of new electric cars in Latvia reached 8.8% of the total number of registered new passenger cars, compared to 6.4% in 2022.

The association informs that the leader in the sale of new electric cars in Latvia last year was “Volkswagen” with 233 cars, which, compared to 2022, is a two-fold increase. Nissan ranked second with 205 cars, which is an increase of 4.6%, and Tesla was in third place with 158 cars, which is a multiple increase.

The collected data also show that 788 used light passenger electric cars were registered in Latvia last year, which is 32.1% more than in 2022.

Among them, the most popular used electric cars were “Tesla” with 374 vehicles registered, which is 50% more than in 2022. BMW ranked second with 180 registered used electric cars, which is an increase of 32.4%. On the other hand, “Audi” was in third place with 87 registered electric cars, which is 2.6 times more than in 2022.

President of the Auto Association and Member of the Saeima Andris Kulbergs (AS) explains that, despite the record number of new electric car registrations, Latvia is one of the last countries in the European Union to introduce an electric car support program.

“Unfortunately, the support program for legal entities has not been implemented so far, so Latvia is at least five years behind in the development of the electric car mobility market. For example, in Germany, the share of new electric car registrations is as much as 22.4%, while in Latvia it is only 8.8%. On the other hand, from Norway Latvia lags behind by at least ten years, where the registration of electric cars has reached as much as 82.4%,” says Kulbergs.

At the same time, he points out that free parking spaces and the possibility to use public transport lanes in Riga have created a situation where 50% of all electric cars registered in Latvia are located in Riga, while Pierīga and Riga in total have as much as 73% of all light passenger electric cars registered in Latvia.

“This indicates that the purchase of electric cars is closely related to living in a private home. The ability to charge a vehicle at home is a key factor for its purchase, as it results in favorably low operating expenses when charging at the household rate,” Kulberg explains.

He also mentions that although statistical data show a positive picture of the transition of the Latvian car fleet to electric cars, the number of new electric car orders has decreased in 2023.

The Auto Association unites motor vehicle manufacturers, motor vehicle component and spare parts manufacturers, importers, authorized car dealers, authorized motor vehicle repair and maintenance service providers.
