Latvia Sees 61% Increase in Hybrid Car Purchases in First Quarter of Year

In the first three months of this year, 61% more new hybrid cars were purchased in Latvia than in the same period a year ago, representatives of “Citadele Leasing” told LETA group, giving reference to the information collected by the company.

In the first quarter, not only the demand for hybrid cars is growing, but also for cars with a gas engine – they were bought by 33% more than a year ago. The total number of transactions in the new car market has fallen by 9%.

Toyota, Volkswagen, Škoda, Dacia and Renault cars are in the first five positions at the top of the most frequently purchased brands. “Toyota”, “Volkswagen” and “Skoda” are the three most popular car manufacturers both in the sector of private individuals and legal entities.

In the first quarter, private people usually bought such car models as “Toyota Rav4”, “Toyota Yaris Cross” and “Toyota Corolla”. At the same time, legal entities have bought “Toyota Hillux”, “Toyota Corolla” and “Renault Master” more actively.

“Toyota”, “Volvo”, “Lexus”, “Tesla”, “Seat”, “Ora”, “MAN”, “Jaguar” and “Isuzu”.

The Chinese electric car “Ora” has been popular – its models were not available in Latvia at all last year, but 28 new cars were bought in the first quarter of this year, which puts it in a market position equal to the most popular. “Tesla”.

At the same time, brands such as “Bentley” and “Fiat” have experienced the greatest decline in terms of the number of purchases.

The chairman of the board “Citadele Leasing” Đirts Glazers explains that two reasons could have contributed to the decrease in new car buying activity – the increase in car prices, as well as the interest rates that are still relatively high.

“In such market conditions, it is not surprising that Chinese electric cars are very popular – “Ora” is competitive because of its price. produced in Latvia so far,” says Glazer.

In the category of motorcycles, the motorcycles “BMW”, “Honda” and “KTM” are the most popular this year, while “Yamaha” went to the fourth place in the list of manufacturers their favorite. The most popular motorcycle model in Latvia this year is “BMW R1300 GS”.

It has already been reported that in January-March, new passenger car registrations in Latvia decreased by 17.1% compared to the corresponding period last year, and is among the eight European Union (EU) countries that recorded a decrease in the first three months of this year, according to the latest data published by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

According to this data, 3,918 new passenger cars were registered in the country between January and March.

It was already reported that in May 2021, the leasing company SIA “Citadele līzings un faktorings”, which is part of the “Citadele” group, changed its name to “Citadele Factoring”, and on 4 January 2021, the bank “Citadele” became SIA “UniCredit Leasing” also as the sole owner, and the name “UniCredit Leasing” was changed to “Citadele Leasing” at the beginning of February. The two leasing companies included in the group – “Citadele Factoring” and “Citadele Leasing” – continue to work independently of each other.

According to the amount of assets, the bank “Citadele” was the third largest bank in Latvia at the end of 2022. Its bonds are included in the list of debt securities of the stock exchange “Nasdaq Riga” . The shareholders of the UK bank are Citadele Holdings LLC, a subsidiary of the US investment company Ripplewood, and a group of international investors (75% and one share), as well as the European Bank for Ath -construction and Development (25% excluding one sector).
