Latvia, from 18:00 on September 12, banned the entry into the country of cars with Russian license plates. The decision was taken on the basis of the clarification of the European Commission of September 8, 2023 regarding Regulation No. 833/2014. This was reported in State Revenue Service of the Republic (analogous to the tax service – ed.).
“From now on, the entry of vehicles registered in the Russian Federation into the European Union through checkpoints of the Republic of Latvia will be prohibited. Persons traveling in a vehicle registered in the Russian Federation will not be able to enter the European Union with it when crossing the state border of the Republic of Latvia. Persons with such vehicles will have to return to the Russian Federation or the Republic of Belarus from the border checkpoint,” the message says.
At the same time, Riga noted that “the ban does not apply to motor transport companies registered in Russia that transport cargo by road in transit through the European Union between the Kaliningrad region and Russia.”
If tourists refuse to leave the country, their car may be confiscated, and they themselves will face criminal liability.
At the same time, the prescription contains ambiguous wording.
“Persons will be allowed to return from the European Union to Russia in passenger vehicles registered in the Russian Federation, if they are not declared as goods and are used only as a means of transportation,” the service clarified.
