According to the SPKC, Latvia is in the first place in the world in terms of the incidence of Covid-19. At the same time, the number of inpatients has halved (56%) over the past week, while a sharp increase of 62.8% has also occurred in inpatients with severe disease.
Of all the tests performed, 32% (40,781 tests) were related to screening of educational institutions, and 68% (85,768 tests) – to the rest of the population. Of the positive cases of Covid-19, 15% (2121 infected) were related to educational screening and 85% (12 219 infected) to the general public. Of all the infections detected in the screening, 65% of epidemiologists in the survey found that symptoms of the disease were observed.
Last week, an average of 18,078 tests were performed per day, compared with 16,176 a week earlier, and an average of 2,049 new cases were detected, 673 more than a week earlier.
According to the SPKC, an increase in the incidence is observed in all age groups, while the increase remains in the age group from 10 to 14 years. There is currently a marked increase in the age group from seven to nine years. The reproductive rate of Covid-19 infection has risen again from 1.28 to 1.33 in the past week, indicating the spread of the infectious disease in the community.
In the cases of Covid-19 detected last week, 11,321 people had not been vaccinated against Covid-19 or had not yet completed the vaccination course, which is 79% of all cases in the past week. In turn, 3,020 people were vaccinated, which is 21% of all cases last week. Comparing the prevalence of infection per 100,000 population among vaccinated and unvaccinated / partially vaccinated people, non-vaccinated and partially vaccinated people in Latvia have Covid-19 infection three times more often than fully vaccinated.
The SPCC notes that as the number of vaccinees increases and the prevalence of Covid-19 infection continues to predominate among non-vaccinated individuals, the overall incidence of infections among vaccinated individuals will increase. However, among vaccinated people, the disease is more often mild and requires less hospitalization, so the proportion of vaccinated and sick people should always be seen in the context of the number of prevented Covid-19 cases in the general population.
The European 14-day cumulative morbidity rate per 100,000 population has increased slightly from 160.6 to 166.1. Meanwhile, in Latvia this indicator has increased from 580.9 to 864.4 during the week. Between mid-September and last week, the most common cases in Latvia came from Turkey (73 cases), Russia (42), Germany (23), Georgia (22), Lithuania (22), Ukraine (21), Italy (20), Sweden ( 19).
It has already been reported that 1253 new cases of Covid-19 were registered in Latvia last day and reports of deaths of seven Covid-19 patients were received, according to the data compiled by the SPKC.
With the large number of cases, the two-week cumulative indicator of morbidity continues to rise rapidly – during the day it has increased from 1266.4 to 1307.2 cases per 100,000 population, which is the highest indicator registered in Latvia so far.
During the Covid-19 wave of the previous winter, the highest cumulative indicator in Latvia was recorded in the middle of January, when it reached 693.9 on January 10.
Of all Covid-19 cases recorded in the previous day, 986 patients had not been vaccinated or had not completed a vaccination course, while 267 had been vaccinated.
Of the deaths recorded in the previous day, one was between 60 and 69 years old, another between 70 and 79 years old, and another five between 80 and 89 years old.
Last day, a total of 8365 Covid-19 examinations were performed in Latvia, but the proportion of positive cases against the tested ones was 15%.
In Latvia, Covid-19 has been laboratory approved for 186,869 people, but 2,897 have died from this disease.
The calculations of the agency LETA show that in the last 14 days the total number of cases has reached 24,749 persons, while the rest are considered to be infected.
