Until December of this year, 30% less natural gas was consumed in Latvia than in 11 months last year.
Electricity was also consumed less: from January to November, less than four percent less electricity was used in Latvia than last year during this time period.
However, in the first ten months of the year, oil consumption increased by less than seven percent. At the same time, consumption of this resource in retail decreased slightly – to less than two percent.
From August to November this year, Latvia reduced its consumption of natural gas by more than 43% compared to the average consumption in these four months over the previous five years, according to the Statistical Office of the European Union (EU).Eurostat“data released on Tuesday.
According to these data, EU gas consumption in the period August-November this year decreased by 20.1% compared to the average consumption of these months in 2017-2021.
Among EU countries, during this period gas consumption decreased the most in Finland – by 52.7%, followed by Latvia with 43.2% and Lithuania with 41.6%.
In fourth place is Estonia, where gas consumption has decreased by more than 35%.
At the end of July, EU Member States decided to voluntarily reduce natural gas consumption by at least 15% compared to the average consumption of the previous five-year period, from 1 August this year to 31 March next year, in a situation where it is necessary to look for alternative sources of gas for Russian supplies.
From August to November, 18 EU countries had reduced their gas consumption by at least 15%, according to “Eurostat” data.
Six countries, including the Czech Republic, Ireland, Portugal and Spain, reduced their consumption by less than 15%, while two countries increased their consumption: Malta (by 7.1%) and Slovakia (by 2.6%). ).
Cyprus is the only EU country that does not use natural gas.
