To use European money to build its economic prosperity, but not to respect the principles of the rule of law, Hungary has done the same thing as Poland. Both countries, as well as Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and a number of other countries, joined the European Union (EU) on 1 May 2004. Prior to that, 67% of citizens supported Latvia’s membership in the EU in the referendum. One of the key arguments was the economic benefits that were promised.
Acquisition of European money – now this phrase is often perceived in Latvia with the subtext “waste”. The Saeima and governments are changing, but problems remain.
Lack of ability, vision, planning, capacity? An idea?
Opinions on this in this “Boer” duel will be expressed by:
- Ivars Ijabs, Member of the European Parliament,
- businessman, investment banker Ģirts Rungainis.
Both of them agree that Latvia’s membership in the EU is an undoubted benefit, and experts also agree with it – businessman Andris Kravalis and economist Jānis Ošlejs.
