Latvia has the fourth highest morbidity and mortality rate with Covid-19 in the European Union

As the level of Covid-19 infection continues to grow in Latvia, but in many other European countries the morbidity decreases, Latvia has risen to the fourth place among the 30 European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries with the highest level of Covid-19 infection. data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

Last week, Latvia was in the 5th place in the “top” of the disease, but before that – in the 6th place.

Latvia has also risen to the fourth place in terms of mortality with a diagnosed Covid-19.

ECDC estimates of the situation in the previous two weeks from 20 September to 3 October show that the cumulative morbidity per 100,000 population in Latvia has risen to 580.9 cases.

The highest incidence rates in the EU and EEA countries in the last two weeks are in Lithuania – 795.5 cases per 100,000 population, followed by Estonia with 658.6 and Romania with 631.5 cases.

However, within the next three days after the period included in the ECDC calculations, the incidence rate in all Baltic countries has increased rapidly and on October 6, the incidence rate in Lithuania was 852.6, in Estonia – 744.9, and in Latvia – 732.1 cases per 100,000 population.

In turn, the lowest incidence rate in Europe is currently in Poland with 34.9 cases per 100,000 population. The average incidence rate in the EU and EEA countries in the previous two weeks is 150.6 cases per 100,000 population.

In Latvia, the 14-day mortality rate with diagnosed Covid-19 has also increased and at the end of the previous week it was 52.9 cases per one million inhabitants. Among the EU and EEA countries, Latvia has risen to the fourth place in this respect. Last week, Latvia was in sixth place.

The highest mortality with diagnosed Covid-19 per million population in the past two weeks was in Bulgaria – 145.3 cases. In Lithuania, the mortality rate is 99.85 cases, while in Estonia the corresponding figure is 26.3 cases.

Also, for the second time since the previous Covid-19 outbreak at the beginning of the year, Latvia has entered the dark red area of ​​the ECDC travel warning card, which indicates to travelers a very high risk of Covid-19 infection.

Estonia and Lithuania are also in the dark red area of ​​this map, and apart from the Baltic States, only Slovenia and several regions in Romania are located in this area.
