Tough restrictions were approved by the Latvian government at an extraordinary meeting on Monday evening. From October 21 to November 15, a night curfew will also apply from 20:00 to 05:00, the Delfi.lv server said.

After the autumn holidays, only first- to third-graders will go to school from 1 November, the others will learn at a distance. Kindergartens should continue to operate. All stores will also be closed except those that sell basic goods.

Restrictions will also affect services: hairdressers, beauty salons and public catering establishments will be closed.

Sports, entertainment and cultural events, including cinemas, theaters and concerts, will be banned. The restriction will also apply to the driving of people from different households in one car, the portal added.

Prime Minister Krišjánis Kariňš and Health Minister Daniels Pavluts have apologized to all citizens who have already been vaccinated against covid-19. They admitted that the vaccination process in the country had in fact failed, which forced a lockdown.

Pavluts promised that life would return to normal after November 15, but not for those who do not get vaccinated until then, the hard restrictions will continue to apply to them, the Delfi.lv server added.

In Latvia, the infection is spreading uncontrollably and there are already more than 1,100 patients with covid-19 in hospitals. “Our healthcare system is at stake,” said the prime minister.
