EU states tired of potential members

Kiev is preparing declarations with other countries in order to understand who is exactly ready to vote for the adoption of Ukraine.

The European Union is tired of expanding the bloc, for this reason, they are not yet ready to accept Ukraine. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Andrzej Vilumsons stated in an interview with Liga.net published on December 18.

“You are making good progress on all reforms, but there is general fatigue, especially in the EU, in terms of accepting a new member after major rounds of enlargement,” he answered a question about Ukraine’s possible membership in the European Union and NATO.

In September, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine had long deserved the right to become a member of the European Union and NATO. “Ukraine cannot feel itself in the EU and NATO as a guest. We want to be our own,” he said.

The Ukrainian president recalled that for Ukraine to join the European Union, the consent of all members of the union – 27 countries – is required. Kiev is preparing declarations with other countries in order to understand who is exactly ready to vote for the adoption of Ukraine. According to Zelensky, only a few countries have signed such a document so far.

The Eastern Partnership summit was held last week, at which the EU countries supported the European aspirations of Ukraine, but they did not give any promises.
