Managua, Jul 4 (EFE) .- The Government of Latvia donated a batch of 849,420 doses of vaccines against covid-19 to Nicaragua to face the coronavirus pandemic, the European Union (EU) headquarters in Managua reported on Monday.

The Baltic country delivered “BioNTech/Pfizer vaccines” to the Central American country through the EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Center,” the community body said.

The shipment of vaccines was received in Managua by the Nicaraguan Minister of Health, Martha Reyes, at the Augusto C. Sandino International Airport, confirmed the Nicaraguan government.

The EU described the donation as “one more action by Team Europe for fair, equitable and universal access to vaccines against covid-19”.

Nicaragua accumulates 243 deaths and 19,096 cases of covid-19 since March 2020, according to the Ministry of Health.

The official data contrasts with that of the Covid-19 Citizen Observatory, a network of independent doctors that monitors the pandemic and that until June 15 reported 6,002 deaths from pneumonia and other symptoms related to the coronavirus, as well as 32,544 suspected cases. of contagion.

Currently, the authorities maintain a permanent day of vaccination against covid-19 for all people from 2 years of age.

In Nicaragua, 85% of the population over 2 years of age already has the full schedule of the covid-19 vaccine, while 93% have at least one dose, according to the authorities.

Since the pandemic began, Nicaragua has not applied restrictive measures as part of the fight against the coronavirus, which has earned it criticism from the World Health Organization (WHO). EFE
