Latvia currently has the highest incidence of Covid-19 in Europe / Day

Last week, Latvia was in the 2nd place after Lithuania among the EU and EEA countries in terms of morbidity. In addition, Latvia is still in fourth place in terms of mortality with a diagnosis of Covid-19.

ECDC estimates of the situation in the previous two weeks from 4 to 17 October show that the cumulative morbidity per 100,000 population in Latvia has risen to 1,256.77 cases.

In the previous two weeks, the incidence rate in Lithuania was 1,163.35 cases per 100,000 population, followed by Estonia with 1,086.55 cases. Currently, the three Baltic States are the only ones in the EU and the EEA where the incidence of Covid-19 exceeds 1,000. Romania is also far behind with 999.97 cases per 100,000 population.

However, within the next three days after the period included in the ECDC calculations, the incidence rate in all Baltic countries has increased rapidly and on October 20 the incidence rate in Latvia was 1463.3, in Lithuania – 1226.7, and in Estonia – 1167.1 cases per 100,000 population.

In contrast, the lowest incidence in two weeks ending on 17 October is currently in Malta, with 47.6 cases per 100,000 population in Europe. The average incidence rate in the EU and EEA countries in the previous two weeks is 190.2 cases per 100,000 population.

In Latvia, the 14-day mortality rate with diagnosed Covid-19 has also increased and at the end of the previous week it was 78.11 cases per one million inhabitants. Among the EU and EEA countries, Latvia ranks fourth in this respect.

The highest mortality rates per million population diagnosed with Covid-19 in the past two weeks have been in Romania, Bulgaria and Lithuania. In Lithuania, the mortality rate is 133.5 cases, while in Estonia the corresponding figure is 49.7 cases. The average mortality rate in the EU and EEA countries in the previous two weeks is 23.7 cases per million population.

Latvia is also located in the dark red area of ​​the ECDC travel warning card, which indicates to travelers a very high risk of Covid-19 infection.

Estonia and Lithuania are also in the dark red area of ​​this map, and in addition to the Baltic States, only Romania, Slovenia, as well as several regions in Bulgaria, Greece, Slovakia and Croatia are located in this area.
