Since the end of last year, German IRIS-T SLM air defense systems have been protecting the skies over Ukraine. Successful application has contributed to the growing number of countries interested in IRIS-T SLM. Latvia and Estonia are ready to jointly purchase anti-aircraft missile systems.
What is known
On September 11, 2023, in Germany, the Ministers of Defense of Latvia and Estonia signed a framework agreement on the purchase of IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense systems. The joint acquisition will allow the two Baltic countries to save money.
After completing negotiations and signing an agreement with the German company Diehl Defense, deliveries of anti-aircraft missile systems will begin. This will take approximately three years, so both countries still have time to train personnel and improve infrastructure.
IRIS-T SLM is one of three versions of the Diehl Defense air defense system. It is designed to intercept unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, helicopters and airplanes. The IRIS-T missile can destroy air threats within a 40 km radius.
The launcher can have four or eight vertical launch containers. The complex also includes a TRML-4D radar capable of tracking air threats, including ballistic missiles, at a range of up to 250 km.
