Frankie Centeno, an ex-convict who disappeared in New York after being released without bail on weapons charges, was captured by federal agents in Puerto Rico, said a police source.
Centeno, who allegedly ignored an order to put on an ankle bracelet after his release in New York, was caught on the Caribbean island Tuesday night, reported New York Post.
A US Marshals Service (USMS) spokesman confirmed the raid, crediting it to the “united intelligence of the NYPD and the US Department of Probation here in New York.” Centeno “was taken into custody without incident,” the USMS spokesman said.
He now faces extradition to New York. on an April 1 warrant for failing to appear in court in the Bronx, and a March 29 warrant for allegedly violating the terms of federal supervised release linked to his most recent conviction.
Rye, who has four convictions for possession of weapons dating back to 2003, He was arrested March 27 inside a restaurant in the Bronx and accused of having a loaded .45-caliber pistol stuck in his waistband.
At his arraignment, the Bronx District Attorney’s Office requested that bail be set at $100,000 cash or $300,000 collateral due to Centeno’s history of violating probation, a spokesman said at the time.
But the Judge Valentina Morales, of the Bronx Criminal Court, He denied the request and instead released Centeno on the condition that he report to the city sheriff’s office so officials could place an electronic monitoring device around his ankle.
Centeno never showed up, which outraged law enforcement officers familiar with his case. “People were surprised that he was released, given his history,” a source said at the time.
