Latina doctor breaks barriers to help women with breast cancer – Noticia y El Correo

Dr. Carmen Guerra offers free mammograms to women who do not have health insurance.

When Dr. Carmen Guerra saw her opportunity to help, she acted immediately. Your connection to Latino communities in and around Philadelphia.

His command of the Spanish language and above all, his medical experience, became his best tools to try to break the biggest barrier for many patients: health insurance.

“The data show that cancer is the number 1 cause of death in Latinos in the United States,” says the specialist. “In women, breast cancer is the first reason.”

Hence, I decided to take action. Dr. Guerra applied to become a site for free mammograms, through the National Program for the Early Detection of Breast and Cervical Cancer, a federal program, which with state assistance, since 2014 has served the doctor to shake hands to more than 4000 women.

“The second thing we did was establish a navigation program to break down barriers,” says Dr. Guerra.

“We put someone in so they could go to community organizations, clinics, health fairs, and that person finds women who don’t have insurance who need mammograms and works with them to organize how to get them done.”
