Alicia Villarreal visits inmates in Mexico
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Mexican singer Alicia Villarreal made a special visit to the inmates of a female reintegration center in Guadalajara, Jalisco. For about three hours she toured the new facility, which includes a library, chapel and workstations, and gave an empowering speech. She also performed two of her greatest hits for the inmates: “The mare was big for you” and “You take advantage.”
Karol G is Woman of the Year
The Colombian singer was awarded the Woman of the Year award at the Billboard Women in Music event held on Wednesday (March 6). After receiving the award from Colombian actress and producer Sofía Vergara, Karol gave a passionate acceptance speech. “In the midst of my desire, in the midst of wanting to make music just for myself, I deciphered that if my environment did not suddenly change, I was the one who had to change and I was the one who was going to do it,” Karol said. “And that I was not going to allow being a woman to be an obstacle or define my capabilities, but rather that it was going to be my strength, it was going to be my motive and my reason.”
He also performed a salsa version of his hit “Amargura.” Watch her performance here.
Hymns girl-power
On the occasion of Women’s History Month, Billboard has put together a list of the best female anthems in Latin music. From “Ovarios” by Jenni Rivera to the Bizarrap and Shakira session and “Yo no soy esa mujer” by Paulina Rubio, these are the songs that continue to make us feel empowered. The list includes shocking songs from different musical genres that may have marked a before and after in the artist’s career, but that also became a timeless element for her fans. See the list here.
The special prize of Carlos Vives
The Colombian singer-songwriter will be honored with this year’s ASCAP Founders Award, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) announced. “Carlos has led a new generation of Latin artists bringing the sounds of Colombian music to music fans around the world,” he said. Paul Williams, chairman and president of ASCAP, in a statement. “His talent and passion for Latin music and culture are incomparable. “His achievements have paved the way for so many others and we are delighted to present him with our highest honor, the ASCAP Founders Award.”
The award presentation will take place on April 2 at El Premio ASCAP 2024 in Miami, an invitation-only event celebrating the winners of this year’s ASCAP Latin Music Awards.
The Montreux Jazz Festival in Miami closes with a flourish
Headlining and co-owned by Jon Batiste, Montreux Jazz Festival Miami made its grand debut at The Hangar in Coconut Grove on March 1. The three-day festival included performances by Cuban musician Cimafunk, Emily Estefan — daughter of Gloria and Emilio Estefan — Daryl Hall, legendary Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and The Wailers, among others. Special guests included Brazilian singer Lia de Itamaracá, who performed alongside Batiste for the first time outside Brazil; and Will Smith, who made a rapping cameo.
