Tegucigalpa. The Latin American presidents will debate on Friday a proposal for “firm condemnation” and possible sanctions against Ecuador for the police assault on the Mexican embassy, reported this Monday the Honduran president, Xiomara Castro, who presides over the bloc.
The proposal was agreed upon this Monday in a virtual meeting by the “Troika” of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), which includes, in addition to Castro, the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and the prime minister of Saint Vincent and the Caribbean. the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves.
The summit, which will be held virtually, was called for Friday at 6:00 p.m. GMT, the president said in a statement.
The leaders will review a proposal from the Troika to call Quito to “promote a dialogue to normalize relations with Mexico” and, if not, “take political positions.” [contra Ecuador]whether these be jointly, bilaterally or in international organizations to force compliance,” Castro added.
The presidents will also discuss a resolution of a “firm condemnation of the State of Ecuador for the illegal entry into the Mexican embassy in Quito, making improper use of force and violating the principle of inviolability of diplomatic headquarters” for “the kidnapping” of the former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, he added.
The shocking operation in Quito to arrest Glas on Friday, with no similar precedents in the world, led Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to immediately break diplomatic relations with Ecuador. Nicaragua did it a day later.
The presidents will also debate the creation of a group of a maximum of seven countries “to define actions with the purpose of requiring the Government of Ecuador to rectify the events that occurred,” which constitute “a flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 and the 1954 Caracas Convention on Asylum.”
