(CNN Español) — Several Latin American countries are preparing to send humanitarian aid to Haiti after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean nation on Saturday morning.
The President of Chile, Sebastian Piñerahe said in a Twitter post on Saturday that he contacted the Haitian authorities and that they are currently preparing to send humanitarian aid that they “no doubt desperately and urgently need.”
The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said in a post on Twitter – on Saturday – that he ordered the National Coordination of Civil Protection and other secretariats, such as Foreign Relations, Navy and Defense, to prepare aid “immediately.”
On Sunday, Mexico sent medical supplies, food and water to Haiti, as part of a shipment of humanitarian aid carried aboard an Air Force plane, according to the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) on Twitter.
The Chancellery of Panama announced on Twitter on Saturday that they are also preparing to send humanitarian aid soon. “Solidarity and aid to the Haitian people goes from Panama,” the Ministry said.
President Luis Abinader, from neighboring Dominican Republic, instructed the foreign minister to call the Haitian counterpart to “facilitate any help within our means,” he said on Twitter on Saturday.
The Vice President and Foreign Minister of Colombia, Marta Lucía Ramírez, said that her government is following the events and is willing to provide assistance in rescue operations and debris removal.
The mayor of Bogotá, Claudia Lopez, reported -on Saturday- on Twitter that a team of firefighters from the Colombian capital would be deployed in Haiti: “Our best rescue team from @BomberosBogota ready to leave tomorrow for Haiti and support them in this difficult situation, under the coordination of our National government”.
Argentina expressed regret for the lives lost and the damages caused by the earthquake. According to a tweet from the Foreign Ministry, this Saturday, the South American country is “willing to cooperate in this difficult time.”
