Latin American citizens have lost interest in the countries of the European Union in the last ten years. This is one of the results of the Atlas of bi-regional interests 2021, presented in the framework of the V Congress of Editors of the European Union and Latin America Caribbean. The study, carried out by the International Prospective Institute, analyzes 53,833,452,771 searches made on the Internet by users from both sides of the Atlantic on countries, cities, subjects and leaders, as well as the news produced in both regions throughout the last year.
On this occasion, in addition to providing the most relevant data for 2021, an evolutionary analysis of the decade in which the study has been carried out, since 2012. The main conclusion is the loss of interest of Latin American citizens in the EU countries . On the contrary, the interest of Europeans in the Latin American Caribbean countries has increased in this period.
Spain is the country that arouses the most interest, with 17%, although it has also decreased (it started in 2012 with quotas close to 30%). Madrid is the reference city for searches by citizens of Latin America Caribbean, reaching in 2021 a share of more than 25%. For their part, the interest of Europeans in Latin American cities has decreased. Buenos Aires continues as the city that interests the most.
Regarding the interest in political leaders on both sides of the Atlantic, Pedro Sánchez regains the leadership of the presidents by beating Briton Boris Johnson by almost ten points. In third place is German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
