The Fontilles Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the fight against leprosy and other neglected diseases, will develop a total of 20 health cooperation projects in five countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, which will benefit around 2022 1,812,000 people.
In Asia, Fontilles will develop thirteen actions in urban and rural settings in four Indian states: Odisha, Andrha Pradesh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. The programs are aimed at detecting leprosy (of which the country registered 65,147 new cases in 2020), treating new cases of this disease and lymphatic filariasis, prevention of disability, physical and socioeconomic rehabilitation, creation of women’s self-help groups and the strengthening of primary care. The entity estimates that 1,360,000 people will benefit.
In Africa, the foundation will promote a project in Mozambique dedicated to the detection and treatment of leprosy and other neglected diseases, and will participate in another in the Democratic Republic of the Congo aimed at the prevention of disability and physical rehabilitation. Together, they will benefit 38,000 people.
In Latin America, the entity will promote four initiatives in Bolivia: two dedicated to the reinforcement of primary care, one to the fight against Chagas disease and another linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. In Brazil, it will participate in a leprosy detection and treatment program. The five actions will benefit 414,000 people.
