“daugava Rags”: A Fusion of Latvian and Indian Folk Music for Reflection and Meditation
For the first time, the ancient folk songs of Latgale and the traditional Rag sounds of India have been masterfully intertwined in a groundbreaking album titled “Daugava Rags. Music for reflection and meditation”. This unique collaboration, a result of the creative synergy between Latvian musicians Biruta Ozoliņa, Indrige Veitner, Vigo Račevskis, Ernest medenis, and Indian Sitara virtuoso Shree Subrata de, offers listeners an authentic and meditative musical experience.
Biruta Ozoliņa, the ideological force behind the project, recalls the inception of this enterprising idea: “I came up with this idea suddenly when I started singing with the ancient Bolsus of Latgalian Bolsus, who was long listening to the rags. Materialized by the exchange of thoughts and records with my friend in India, as well as many attempts to repeat the phrases of the samples in Latvia. I wonder about my recklessness,but I did not regret that in 2023 I organized Subrata de solo concerts in Latvia.”
Shree Subrata de, a master of the Hindustanas bishnupur ghrana classical music tradition, brings a rich palette of moods and colors to the album. His ability to create expressive musical imagery complements the pristine chants of South Latgale, which bear a closer resemblance to Lithuanian folklore than Latvian. Thes chants,characteristic of the Upper Daugava region,were meticulously recorded in areas like Aleja,Nierzas,Braids,and Andrupene,where Anna Berzkalne once preserved the voices of the past in wax cylinders.The album’s creation was driven by a shared recognition of the similarities between Latgalian and Indian traditional music. Subrata de noted the parallels in sound,phrasing,and the use of Dhrupad singing style elements,emphasizing the focus on deep,personal experiences.
From February 5,2025,“Daugava Rags” will be available at major music outlets in latvia and online. The official launch event will take place on February 11, 2025, at the LNB Ridge Hall at 5 PM. this project is supported by the VKKF and the Latvian Folklore Repository, ensuring its cultural significance and preservation.
