latest wes anderson movies, Kota Asteroid (streaming now on peacocks), centers around a fictional drama within a fantasy film, set in the fictional city of Asteroid City. There, a crater left by a meteorite impact attracts a group of curious people including an alien who befriends Crom. Wherever you find a new hole, there’s usually a good story attached to it.
Every inhabitant of the Moon’s South Pole probably had his or her own cinematic call to adventure on August 19, when Russia’s Luna 25 lunar lander suddenly crashed during landing.
NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter discovered the impact location of Luna-25
The mission will return Russia to the moon for the first time since the original Space Race. This would also make them the first people to land on the soft ground at the Moon’s south pole, a region particularly attractive due to its frozen water reserves. Instead, their first lunar mission in half a century fails to reach the finish line when a freak event sends the spacecraft hurtling towards the moon at high speed.

Two days after Roscosmos lost contact with the Luna 25 spacecraft, the Russian space agency published its estimated point of impact. NASA scientists on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) team then directed the orbiter to take new images of the region. They then compared these new images with historic images of the same region.
Soon, they discovered a new hole in the vicinity of Roscosmos’ estimated location. The crater is estimated to be around 10 meters in diameter and is located around 400 kilometers from the planned Luna 25 landing site.
Most importantly, the most recent image of the area is more than a year old, and was taken in June 2022. With that in mind, all we can know for sure is that something created a new crater between June 2022 and August 24, 2023, when new photo has been taken. However, considering its proximity to the crash site of Luna-25, it is likely that the crater was caused by an impact.
This was not the outcome Russia intended, but each accidental crater is a testament to humanity’s enduring spirit of exploration. As Wayne Gretzky once said, you will miss 100% of the future holes you don’t shoot, or something like that.
