Ukrainian General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, who is leading the offensive in the south, claimed another breakthrough on Saturday. The Ukrainians are said to have broken through at the village of Verbove “and are advancing even further,” the general counters CNN.
Verbove is located near Robotyne, the village of which almost nothing is left. A month ago, Ukraine recaptured Robotyne from the Russians in the counter-offensive that has been going on for months.
Tarnavskyi admits that the offensive is going slower than hoped. “Not as quickly as we had hoped, not as in the films about the Second World War. The most important thing is that we keep the initiative.”
A few weeks ago, Ukraine said it had broken through Russia’s first line of defense in the south. Kyiv hoped to advance towards the Sea of Azov.
Then the Russian-occupied territory would be split in two and the western part, including Crimea, would be cut off by land from the Donets Basin and Russia. But the sea is still a very long way away and that goal does not seem very realistic at the moment.

Generals injured in rocket attack on Russian headquarters
At least nine people have been killed and 16 injured in Ukrainian rocket attacks on the Russian navy headquarters. This was reported by Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukrainian military intelligence.
Ukraine carried out the missile attacks on the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol on Friday. Ukraine itself called it a “successful attack.” According to the latest information available to Budanov, several generals are among the wounded. For example, a high-ranking Marine would be unconscious and a high-ranking general would even be in mortal danger.
The Russian Defense Ministry previously said that one soldier was missing. At first the Russians even reported that the soldier had been killed, but they later changed their mind.
Reports are circulating that Viktor Sokolov, the leader of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, was killed by the missile strike. Budanov could not confirm that. “We are still trying to map everything out.”

Norway arrests former Wagner commander
Norwegian police have arrested Andrey Medvedev, a former commander of the Russian mercenary army Wagner, near the border with Russia. According to Norway, the man wanted to return to Russia. His lawyer denies this.
Earlier this year, Medvedev applied for asylum in Norway. He had fled from Russia to Norway.
As commander of the Wagner Group, Medvedev said he witnessed war crimes and human rights violations by troops in Ukraine. He applied for political asylum because he feared for his life in Russia.
Zelensky awards Poland for war aid
On his way back from the United States and Canada, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a short stop in Poland.
In the eastern Polish city of Lublin, about 70 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, Zelensky presented awards. He did this in gratitude for the war aid from various Poles.
Journalist Bianka Zalewska, among others, received an award. She organized humanitarian aid to Ukraine and brought injured children to Polish hospitals. Damian Duda also received an award. He and a team of doctors treated wounded Ukrainian soldiers at the border.

Lavrov lashes out at West and calls peace plan unfeasible
Finally, a message from New York, where Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has lashed out at the West and Zelensky. “The West is simply fighting us directly,” he said of the war in Ukraine.
According to Lavrov, countries elsewhere in the world are being lied to by the West when it comes to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The foreign minister accuses Western countries of a “colonial attitude” because they look for support for Ukraine in African, Asian and South American countries.
Lavrov also told reporters that Ukraine’s peace plan, a 10-point plan proposed by Zelensky late last year, is “completely unfeasible.” According to him, “everyone knows it is an impossible plan, but at the same time they say it is the only basis for negotiations.”
