Ukrainian commander-in-chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi hinted last week that the fighting at the front is increasingly showing similarities with the drawn-out trench battle during the First World War. The ground troops would be literally and figuratively stuck in the mud. Even lighting a fire is not an option, because then they give away their positions.

The British claim that Russian leaders in the field do not have their affairs in order. Because there are not enough capable people, but also because the logistical support leaves much to be desired.

The British Ministry of Defense also recently confirmed Commander-in-Chief Zaluzhnyi’s report that the Ukrainian army and the Russians are carrying out high-risk attacks on both sides in the battle for Avdiivka (Donetsk province). It would have cost the Russian troops two hundred armored vehicles.

First Dutch F-16s on their way to Romania

The first five Dutch F-16s are on their way to the European training center in Romania. The fighter jets will be used there to train Ukrainian pilots.

The Netherlands, together with Denmark and the United States, is taking the lead in training Ukrainian pilots. The Netherlands makes a total of twelve to eighteen F-16s available for training purposes.

Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren announced almost a month ago that the first aircraft would leave for Romania within a few weeks. Denmark is expected to supply six F-16s. The aircraft will not leave NATO airspace during the exercises.

Ukraine is expected to be able to deploy F-16s in the fight against Russia from next spring. Several Western countries, including the Netherlands, have promised devices. Ukraine hopes to break Russian dominance in its own airspace.

Brand new Russian naval ship hit

Finally, the British confirm President Volodymyr Zelensky’s reports that Ukrainian forces damaged the Russian naval ship Askold in Crimea on Saturday. The ship dates from 2021 and was not yet officially part of the Russian fleet.

According to the British Ministry of Defense, the attack shows that Ukraine is capable of hitting the Russians in Crimea. This could make the Russians consider moving their shipyard from Kerch to somewhere beyond the range of Ukrainian missiles. However, this could delay the delivery of new ships.
