Latest Update on Dutch Government Formation 2024: Party Leaders Resume Talks with Informant Ronald Plasterk

Jan 5, 2024 at 3:41 PM Update: 10 minutes ago

Party leaders Geert Wilders (PVV), Dilan Yesilgöz (VVD), Pieter Omtzigt (NSC) and Caroline van der Plas (BBB) will continue talking with informant Ronald Plasterk from next Tuesday. Interviews have been scheduled until Thursday, January 11.

The thread is picked up again where it left off: guaranteeing the Constitution, fundamental rights and the democratic constitutional state and substantive negotiations.

Plasterk wants to meet with the chairmen of the factions and their so-called seconds (co-negotiators) at the De Zwaluwenberg estate in Hilversum. The first conversation is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m. The times on the other days have not (yet) been announced.

The formation started to move a little bit just before the Christmas holidays after the exploration period had been completed.

That is why the co-negotiators joined the party leaders in the week before the holidays. Plasterk wants to complete this phase by “early February” at the latest and report to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The week of Christmas was a real holiday for all parties involved. No conversations with the scout were officially on the agenda this week, but it is hinted in the corridors that the party leaders have not been completely idle.

Concerns about the PVV and the rule of law have not disappeared

The concerns about the PVV and the rule of law have not yet disappeared. They still exist, especially at NSC. For that reason, Omtzigt initially did not even want to sit down with Wilders.

Plasterk found a solution by combining those concerns with the substantive negotiations. This way, formation could already take place.

In any case, it became clear in the debate about the exploration that the potential coalition-to-be is already taking the initiative. For example, the four parties tried to block the dispersal law, which is currently in the Senate.

Due to the anger that followed among the old coalition parties (VVD, D66, CDA and CU) and within the outgoing cabinet, the attempt was largely withdrawn.

Although little actually changed in the law that should better distribute asylum seekers among the municipalities, the new political relationships in The Hague became clearly visible.
