Although we originally imagined that news would flow sporadically from the FTC hearings with Microsoft, the parties to the Activision acquisition, the opposite is true. Countless interesting things arrive every day, so in the course of a single day, we follow up on the morning’s quick list of news and bring more. Let’s start by saying that the poorly redacted Sony documents that revealed that The Last of Us Part II and Horizon Forbidden West had budgets in excess of $200 million have been removed from the evidence list. They will probably be replaced digitally blackened versions that will replace inconsistently treated documents with a black marker through which the data showed through. But now on to other news, which follow on from some of the earlier findings and naturally also bring completely new findings.
Sega doesn’t want to be bought
Following a leaked email between Phil Spencer and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella regarding an agreement to approach Sega for an acquisition, comes a statement from the Japanese company. Regardless of the fact that the email is from 2021 and an acquisition is clearly not on the table, Sega has spoken out in favor of Bloomberg in the sense that at the moment there are no negotiations in connection with the sale and it is simply not for sale. Operations director Šuji Ucumi gave the statement to the aforementioned agency, and it seems that it was a fairly strong opinion, although there is no explanation at what point Microsoft’s courtship actually ended two years ago.
The Switch’s successor will be roughly as powerful as the PlayStation 4
During the debate over whether Microsoft can keep its promise to bring more Call of Duty installments to Nintendo’s console, Bobby Kotick stated that negotiations were already underway with Nintendo. Of course, it also included the form and specification of the future console – the successor to the Nintendo Switch – which, according to Kotick, should be approximately as powerful as the PlayStation 4, or Xbox One. He ruled out that the console would match the performance of the PS5 or Xbox Series, which may indicate that Nintendo will once again go the hybrid console route. Kotick also stated that Activision’s failure to support and release games for the Switch was ultimately a mistake, Kotick said, underestimating how successful the Switch could ultimately be.
Kotick kept the door open and wanted to discuss Call of Duty for himself
Another thing that concerns Call of Duty, Bobby Kotick, but mainly also Jim Ryan, is the information that, in addition to the agreement with Microsoft to publish the famous action series on PlayStation, Sony and Activision’s captain himself were to offer something similar. According to Jim Ryan, Kotick said last year that he would like Sony’s current marketing partnership with Call of Duty – which expires in 2024 – to continue, which Ryan himself described as an attempt to insure himself in case the acquisition did not go through. This is where the previously communicated statement of the head of PlayStation is supposed to come from, when he had to answer that he is not interested in any agreement and the only thing he is interested in is to stop the courtship and the entire acquisition.
