Signal is developing a stories feature similar to Instagram, like Snapchat. Snapchat was the first to launch Stories, a feature that lets users share ephemeral photos or videos that disappear after 24 hours.
Snapchat was the first to introduce the Stories feature before, including WhatsApp and Instagram. Currently, it is rumored that messaging platform Signal will also join the Stories bandwagon.
According to XDA Developers, who performed an APK teardown of the latest version of the app, Signal may be working on some kind of Stories self-destruct feature. The name, however, has yet to be decided. From the available information, it looks like the new feature will be very similar to Stories on Instagram and Snapchat.
The new feature will allow specific individuals or groups to view a story uploaded by a user. Viewers will also be able to react directly with an emoji or respond with texts. The app will then notify the user as they arrive. There will probably also be an option to disable reactions/replies altogether.
Signal did not formalize anything
The report of XDA Developers also mentions that users might be able to include text or URLs in a story and that there will be a counter, where people can see it before it disappears.
All of these options, however, appear to be completely optional, meaning users will have the ability to turn them off if they wish.
Signal hasn’t made anything official yet, so the feature could be completely different in the final version, if it ever goes live. If a user wants to try it out sooner, they can join Signal’s beta program.
