If the last build brought a big package of news to the Beta channel, now Microsoft is continuing it. I’m forwarding that Windows 11 build 22631 will become version 23H2 in a few months. Last time we got passkeys, Explorer with redesigned navigation or the option not to group icons on the taskbar.
What did the development team give its audience this time? Windows 11 Insider Preview build 22631.2129 contains news that was sometimes offered by the Dev channel just a moment earlier. So keep an eye out for the Windows Insider label. Now let’s get to the news:
Windows Copilot. Chat AI has arrived in the Beta channel in its first iteration. We have already written about our experiences. It is rather a certain demo, the connection with the system is still minimal. Chatbot requires Edge 115.0.1901.150 or later, distribution is managed.
Dev Drive. It is a new type of volume that is oriented towards the developer scene. ReFS has been optimized specifically for needs such as hosting source code, work folders or package caches. The volume must be at least 50 GB.
Notification area. Instead of a numeric indicator of missed notifications, you’ll see a bell symbol next to the clock. When it is filled with the color of the theme, some notifications are waiting for you. But you won’t know the number anymore.
Main panel. Programs can use the new pinning API. If you do, a dialog will appear asking if you’re even interested before trying to pin.
Projecting an image. When multitasking, Windows 11 notifies you with notifications that you can project the image onto an external screen. In the Quick Setup, you will learn that you can receive an image from an external computer. Easily install the optional wireless projection feature.
Detecting your presence. If you have a computer with a presence sensor, the screen brightness will automatically decrease in your absence. You can now set the functions associated with the sensor in the wizard that appears after installing Windows 11. Just enable it in the privacy settings phase.
Start menu. In Pro and Enterprise editions, you’ll see previews with file information for file suggestions in Start. Supported types will be added. It only applies when logging in to AAD.
Task Manager. The program settings page better matches the design principles of Eleven.
Settings. When traveling, the system will suggest a time zone change. A notification will appear directly in Settings if you do not have location detection turned on, which is necessary to detect a time zone change.
Windows Hello for Business. Passwordless login is also available on the computers where you log in to AAD. A password is not required in key scenarios when using the computer. A policy is used for setting EnablePasswordlessExperience.
Voice Control and Narration. Narration has improved in Excel, Microsoft has modified commands for editing in Word. Voice control is now also available on the login screen, but it still does not support Czech.

Microsoft notes that this test build does not reach every computer participating in the Windows Insider program. Some will be omitted due to an unspecified problem. It is said to be a very low percentage. At the same time, those new to the Beta channel will not get this build due to potential issues.
