Latest Monkeypox Case Confirmed in Binh Duong Province, Vietnam

Binh Duong Province’s Department of Health recorded that a 19-year-old youth from Tuan An City contracted monkeypox after being infected by a 22-year-old male patient living in Ho Chi Minh City.

On the afternoon of October 6, Huynh Minh Chin, Deputy Director of Binh Duong Province’s Department of Health, said that after his friend (22 years old – the fifth patient in Ho Chi Minh City) got sick and tested positive for monkeypox, he went to Becamex International Hospital to get tested. . The patient is being treated in isolation at the Infectious Disease Department of Tuan City Medical Center.

This is the seventh patient in the country with monkeypox in Binh Duong Province, and the second domestic infection case with a confirmed source of infection. The monkeypox patient in Binh Duong Province is a 22-year-old girl whose boyfriend was also confirmed to have been infected domestically. The source of infection has not yet been confirmed for this boyfriend (the first case in Korea) and three other patients.

After Binh Duong Province Public Health discovered the second case in the province, it urgently cooperated with Tuan An City Medical Center to take measures to prevent the disease from spreading to the community, and has since September 5 to present all close contacts of the patient. People underwent epidemiological investigation and were advised to undergo monitoring to thoroughly control pathogens.

Authorities did not disclose how many people had been in close contact with the patient.

Meanwhile, the 22-year-old female patient is expected to be discharged from the hospital on October 10 as her health has stabilized after receiving intensive treatment.

Last year, Ho Chi Minh City recorded its first two cases of monkeypox. They were infected overseas and immediately returned home to be quarantined to prevent the spread of infection to the community.

Currently, medical experts believe that this proves that while domestically transmitted monkeypox cases are rapidly increasing in Thailand and China, the disease has been introduced into Vietnam and is quietly spreading through the community through several generations.

Travelers from countries where monkeypox is prevalent should avoid contact with mammals such as rodents, marsupials, and primates that may carry the monkeypox virus. When returning to Vietnam, they must actively report to local health authorities and undergo monitoring.

The monkeypox epidemic occurred in May 2022 and appeared in countries where the virus had never circulated, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Belgium, Thailand, India, and Spain. To date, the total number of infected people worldwide is more than 90,000, mainly men who have sex with men. The mortality rate from monkeypox is 0-11% and is higher in young children. On July 23, 2022, WHO declared monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern, classified as a dangerous infectious disease.

Currently, Vietnam only has a smallpox vaccine and no vaccine or special treatment for monkeypox.
