From January 1, 2025, the Deutschlandticket will become more expensive, as decided by the federal states. However, there are many aspects to consider when it comes to the price increase.

Berlin – How much will the Deutschlandticket cost from January 2025? This is something that many of the approximately 13 million users of the cheap offer are probably thinking about. Since the price increase was announced in July, there has been speculation about it – and how many people would jump ship if it were increased. But from the perspective of the federal states, the measure is unavoidable, as the cheap ticket is a burden on their budgets. In the autumn, the state transport ministers want to decide on the final price.

Deutschlandticket will be more expensive in 2025: 59 euros from January?

The federal and state governments have therefore commissioned a study to assess the consequences of various price increases. The results of the study are now available. Spiegel reported. According to this, if the price were to increase by five euros, around seven percent of current ticket holders would cancel their subscriptions.

The evaluation examined how current Deutschlandticket customers would react to a price increase. This ultimately depends on whether a price increase could actually generate more money for local public transport.

According to the analysis, a price increase of five euros (10.2 percent) would result in 6.7 to 7.1 percent of customers being lost. A price increase of ten euros (20.4 percent) paints a more ambiguous picture: According to the analysis, 10.3 to 21.1 percent of Deutschlandticket customers would be lost. If the price increased by 2.50 euros, 2.4 to 3.9 percent of customers would cancel their subscription.

Costs for the Deutschlandticket from 2026 unclear

The analysis assumes that in all three cases, more money would be raised for public transport overall – but only under the assumption that other ticket prices for local transport also increase by the same percentage. However, it is considered very unlikely that all tickets would become 20 percent more expensive in parallel with the Deutschlandticket, for example.

The Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) called on politicians to make financing commitments for 2026 as well. “The federal and state governments have ordered the Deutschlandticket. They will jointly pay three billion euros annually for the years 2023 to 2025. The financing of this amount is still completely open from 2026 and is not included in the federal government’s financial planning,” said VDV General Manager Oliver Wolff.

Associations expect the Deutschlandticket to increase to 59 euros in the next few years

There has been speculation for weeks about the price of the Deutschlandticket from 2025. The passenger association Pro Bahn told the Rheinische Postthat they expect a “medium-term” increase to 59 euros per month. However, from 2025 onwards, they consider an increase of just five euros, i.e. to 54 euros per month, to be “acceptable”.

The Federal Government’s Commissioner for Rail Transport, Michael Theurer (FDP), called on the states and transport associations to do more to promote the sale of the subscriptions. Above all, they must also encourage more employers to use job tickets, he told the Augsburg GeneralThe ticket can help companies to achieve better climate balances in their sustainability reports. Some employers are already offering the Deutschlandticket as a job ticket at a reduced price of 34.30 euros.
