The latest outbreak of the Ebola virus in Congo, in the northwest of the African country, is officially over. Health Minister Eeti Longondo said this on Wednesday.
The outbreak occurred in the northwestern Equatorial Province. Since the first infection was identified on June 1, 119 confirmed cases and 11 probable cases have been recorded and a total of 55 deaths have occurred, according to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO).
The WHO also confirms the end of the new epidemic. According to the organization, vaccinations took place on a massive scale: ‘more than 40,580 people’ received a vaccine. This was the eleventh Ebola epidemic in Congo since the viral disease appeared in 1976. The last epidemic, the deadliest, killed 2,277 people. That epidemic officially started on August 1, 2018 and ended on June 25 of this year.
