Late goals secure dramatic draw for Eintracht against Hamburg – Match Recap and Reactions

For a long time, the hosts from Hamburg looked like the sure winners of the game thanks to their goals in the first half. But Eintracht improved, forced more chances to score and were rewarded late with goals from Cecile Carneiro (89th) and Anna Aehling (90th). Point gain on the Elbe!

Compared to the start of the second half of the season against FSV Gütersloh, head coach Friederike Kromp made one personnel change: Tessa Zimmermann returned to the starting line-up after a yellow-red suspension, but the injured Marlene Wild sat out the away game in Norderstedt. After Johanna Berg played in defensive midfield against Gütersloh, the goalscorer from the first leg against the Rothosen started attacking again as usual.

But the hosts got their first chances. While the first shot from Hamburg’s top goalscorer Larissa Mühlhaus landed easily in the arms of Lina Altenburg (8th), the SGE keeper had no chance shortly afterwards. After another standard, the ball landed in the net with an own goal (12th). The early lead for HSV, who certainly lived up to their role as favorites in the first half, even though the number of scoring opportunities in this game was limited. Svea Stoldt aimed just wide (19th), but Victoria Schulz made it 2-0 from a difficult position (37th).

The Hessian defense didn’t allow much on the Elbe, but Hamburg showed itself to be efficient and callous. At Eintracht, however, things got even worse after conceding two goals: Lisa Berger had to go out injured, Mina Matijevic replaced the central defender in the correct position. Halftime.

Carneiro and Aehling score late

Eintracht started the second 45 minutes with new momentum. Jonna Brengel had the first chance to score for the guests from Main, but the ball was difficult to take and missed the goal (49th). The Eintracht team’s game was now more effective, Kromp’s team allowed almost nothing, but on the other hand there was initially a lack of offensive action. The Hamburg team repeatedly looked for the Frankfurt gap, but most of the action took place in the midfield.

Substitute Cecile Carneiro tried a cross and found her taker in captain Paulina Platner, but the shot landed in Naward’s arms (68th). On the other hand, Altenburg parried strongly against Mühlhaus for a corner (72′). On Platner’s next attempt, Sarah Wiesner kept her foot in, but Naward was there again (77′). Frankfurt pressed again in the final phase and knew about the starting position. If there was to be another point, then something had to happen.

Carneiro took out Berg’s pass and shot the ball unstoppably into the far corner with her strong left foot (89′). Anna Aehling went one step further and coolly pushed Platner’s long ball behind the line (90′). It was a strong and furious finish from Eintracht, which resulted in a late point win.

“Believed and worked”

“We saw two completely different halves today,” summed up head coach Kromp after the game. “The half-time break was important for us, the switch to a three-man chain, together with the girls’ morale, was the key to winning the point. Despite missed opportunities, they continued to believe and work; Hamburg had no answer. We are really happy because the girls have rewarded themselves. We had completely different spaces in the second half and were more effective in our pressing. The point is totally deserved.”
