With the pandemic, the number of Irish people working at home more than tripled, reaching between 700,000 and one million people, the highest rate in Europe (47 % selon Eurofound), after Belgium and before France (40%). It must be said that a good part of the economy lends itself perfectly to this, especially to Dublin, home to many international and digital companies like Apple Europe. In addition, according to a study carried out in October, 94% of respondents wish to continue to telework, once the restrictions are lifted.
The government thinks big
But for now, legally, ireland is lagging behind. While everyone can theoretically request to work from home, there is no guarantee or legal protection to support the request. An employer can always refuse, without explanation. Not for long.
The government has thought big by presenting a national strategy to supervise and guarantee teleworking. Between now and September, a battery of texts will modify labor law. In addition to this legal framework, the government wishes to create an environment protective
with a right to disconnect, but also auspicious
businesses and teleworkers: a tax deduction is provided to reimburse part of the electricity and Internet subscription at home.
The advantages are well known: reducing transport and carbon emissions, emphasizing the quality of life, balancing regional development, etc. Dublin and its urban area in fact concentrate a third of the working population. The state has also promised to apply the measures to itself. It targets at least 20% of civil servants working from home.
