[라이센스뉴스 최인철 기자]In the global smartphone market last year, Samsung Electronics maintained the undisputed first place with sales of around 260 million units.
According to market research firms Canalis and IDC on the 3rd, Apple dropped to 2nd place with 200 million units and Huawei of China 3rd with 180 million units.
China’s Huawei once threatened Samsung Electronics and was aiming for the top spot, but was hit by a direct hit of sluggish sales in the U.S. European market in the aftermath of an all-out economic war between the U.S. and the Chinese government, and sales decreased by nearly 20% compared to 2019. Moreover, it will not be easy to maintain the top 5 market share by selling the low-cost brand’Honour’.
Apple also showed off its 5G iPhone, which is a year and a half later than Samsung and LG Electronics. Apple set a quarterly record with 81.8 million units sold in the fourth quarter of 2020.
Samsung Electronics’ sales decreased by about 10% compared to the 2019s of last year, and Apple’s increased by 8% last year.
Market research firms analyzed that “Amid Huawei’s sluggishness, sales of Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo increased.” In particular, Xiaomi sold nearly 150 million units last year, increasing the rate of nearly 20% compared to 2019, raising the possibility of emerging as a Huawei replacement company.
An industry insider noted that “How Samsung Electronics’ new Galaxy 21 will calm the craze of Apple’s iPhone 12 series is the biggest variable in the global smartphone market this year.”
