The capture of the islet, which lies about 30 kilometers off the coast of Ukraine, was reported yesterday by the Ukrainian border guard. According to the authorities, all connections with the island have been cut and the infrastructure has been destroyed.
All 13 guards on the island were killed in the attack by the naval vessel, Ukrainian President Zelensky said during a speech. Ten of them were officers.
“All our border guards died a heroic death in the defense of the island,” Zelensky said. The president also announced that they will be honored posthumously as ‘Hero of Ukraine’. He emphasized that anyone who gives his life for the country should never be forgotten.
They are among a total of 137 Ukrainians killed since Russia attacked the country from various sides on Thursday night.
