FROM The highly contagious strain of coronavirus that has spread around the world since it was discovered in Britain late last year is 30 to 100 percent more deadly than previous variants, researchers said, quoted by BTA.
“Significantly higher” mortality, according to a study comparing fatalities among those infected with the new variant of SARS-CoV-2, known as B.1.1.7, and those infected with other strains in the UK.

Option B.1.1.7 was first discovered in England in September 2020. It has since spread to more than 100 countries.
He has 23 mutations in the genetic code – relatively many. Some of them make it much more contagious. According to British experts, it is transmitted by about 40-70 percent easier than the wild coronavirus from Wuhan.
In the study, published in the British Medical Journal, infection with the new strain led to 227 deaths among 54,906 patients with covid-19, compared with 141 among the same number of patients infected with other variants.

“Combined with its ability to spread rapidly, this makes B.1.1.7 a threat that we need to take seriously,” said Robert Challen of the University of Exeter, who is among the study’s leaders.
Virologist and professor of molecular oncology Lawrence Young explained that the exact mechanisms responsible for higher mortality in option B.1.1.7 are not yet clear, but “may be related to higher levels of virus replication, as and easier transmission. “

He added that the British strain was probably responsible for the increase in cases in Europe in recent months.
