It’s a pity – but unfortunately also symptomatic of the “capital of demolition” Linz: An old bus shelter – the last Linz memento of the historic tram to St. Florian, which opened 110 years ago and was discontinued in 1974 – was demolished. There were attractive ideas for use – for example as a rest area along the new cycle highway. The little house was sanded just before Christmas, although that wasn’t necessary.
In the curve above the roundabout at the Ebelsberg bypass, there was an ancient shelter right next to the new bike path. “Tracks and everything else has already been dismantled as part of the construction of a cycle path right next to it. Let’s at least preserve this souvenir and convert it into a resting place for tired cyclists. That would be a hit, especially for families on the way to Lake Pichlinger!”, demanded Linzplus councilor Lorenz Potocnik in mid-November. There was also the idea of resurrecting the more than 60-year history of the ‘Florianerbim’ on two display boards.
The Linz city councilor Dietmar Prammer (SPÖ) was responsible for the object, but he apparently did not give in: “Unfortunately, our efforts have not brought anything, the bus shelter was demolished shortly before Christmas,” says Kurt Jedlicka Club Florianerbahnwho holds up the memory of the tram that was once known as the “Jungle Express” to the southern suburbs of Linz in the museum depot in St. Florian.
The demolition was not necessary, because the new cycle path, which is being built here next to the main road, has plenty of space next to it: “To tear down is the simplest and most unimaginative solution. Whether she is the smartest, however, is another matter. Linz is now predestined to demolish and destroy everything old. Unfortunately, this attitude has not changed under the new planning councilor Prammer,” says Lorenz Potocnik.
