Last Mission of Aerobee Rocket: Exploring Earth’s Upper Atmosphere

SPACE — On January 17, 1985, the United States launched its 1,037th Aerobee rocket and it was the last mission of that type of rocket. The Aerobee rocket was the first sounding rocket launched by the US to research the Earth’s upper atmosphere.

The small suborbital rocket measures various things high in the sky, such as temperature, pressure, radiation and ozone. The last Aerobee rocket launched was a variation called the Aerobee 150, and it took off from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

The rocket is about 30 feet tall and can fly up to 170 miles with a payload weighing up to 150 pounds. The rocket’s payload is a device designed to observe air jets, or constant faint light in the Earth’s atmosphere. Source: Space.com
