While many arrangements were made in the mosque prepared for the opening, specially prepared carpets were laid in areas where there was no restoration work. It was seen that the area consisting of apartments was left empty behind the muezzin at the Ayasofya-i Kebir Mosque.
Istanbul Culture and Tourism Manager Coskun Yilmazanswered our question about why the field was left blank.
Yılmaz, “The area left blank is the crown area of the emperors. For this reason, it was left empty. Here are examples of marbles used in the construction of Hagia Sophia in circular colored areas. Different interpretations about the area do not match historical information.” Yilmaz said that the curtain covering the frescoes in the dome part of the mosque will be closed in time prayers as planned.
