Lieutenant General Metin Iyidil, former Commander of the Land Forces Command Education and Doctrine Command, Combat and Combat Training Support, was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment in the case where FETO was tried for “attempting to abolish the constitutional order” after the coup attempt on 15 July 2016.
DISCONNECTED FIRST
Upon appeal against the decision of the local court, the file was moved to the Ankara District Courthouse 20 Criminal Division. The Chamber decided on the acquittal of Iyidil and ruled his evacuation.
The Ankara Criminal Court of First Instance, the 21st Criminal Division, which examined the appeal upon the objection of the acquittal and the release decision against Iyidil, decided to arrest Iyidil.
LAST POINT IS ADDED
The file came to the Supreme Court upon appeal. The 16th Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court ruled that the acquittal decision on Iyidil was overturned. The Court of Cassation cited the reason for disrupting the decision of the 20th Criminal Chamber, which decided to evacuate, without opening a hearing and the incomplete examination of Iyidil’s actions.
CONTINUE TO ARREST
Stating that the actions of Iyidil constituted the crime of “helping attempt to eliminate the constitutional order” according to the current file situation, however, the Supreme Court ruled that the case file should be sent to the Ankara 2nd High Criminal Court after the missing examinations had been completed. It was also decided to continue the detention of Iyidil.
