Last minute penalty criticism against Cüneyt Çakır

Cüneyt Çakır, the referee of the match, was heavily criticized from the Italian side because of the last minute penalty given in the match where Milan lost 2-1 to Atletico Madrid.

90+7 of the 1-1 match. At the end of the match, players and commentators showed intense reaction to Cüneyt Çakır, who showed the penalty spot after the position in the 1st minute.

When the minutes showed 90+5, it was claimed that Milan’s Pierre Kalulu hit the ball in his hand during the double fight with Thomas Lemar. The Italians argued that the penalty decision was wrong, as the ball first hit Lemar’s hand and then Kalulu’s hand when the position was re-watched.

On the other hand, intense criticism was made against referee Cüneyt Çakır about why VAR did not step in after the penalty decision. Milan’s Bennacer said at the end of the match, ““Even if you give your all, small details determine the result in matches. It hurts to lose like that. I don’t understand why there is VAR? If the penalty went to VAR, it would have been cancelled”
