New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has started the new year from where he left off in Christchurch 2020. Williamson scored his last Test double century in 2020 and now has his first Test double century in 2021. Williamson once again scored a double century in the second Test against Pakistan. New Zealand declared their innings at 659 for six in the first innings as the captain batted from the front with a double century. Williamson was dismissed for 238.
Henry Nichols (157 off 291 balls) and Daryl Mitchell (102 not out off 112 balls) were the other notable contributors. Pakistan, who were bowled out for 297 in the first innings, started the second innings with a debt of 362 runs.
Williamson hit 238 off 364 balls with 28 fours. Williamson added a triple-century partnership with Henry Nichols for the fourth wicket as the hosts collapsed to 71 for three. Both added 369 runs to the Kiwis scoreboard! After Nichols, wicketkeeper-batsman Watling was out quickly, but Williamson completed another century with Daryl Mitchell. The duo added 133 runs for the Kiwis’ scoreboard.
This is the Kiwis captain’s fourth double century in Tests. Williamson’s double century in the Test against the West Indies in Hamilton in December 2020 was his last double century in international Test cricket in 2020. Williamson’s 251 off 412 balls was his highest Test score. Williamson, who scored a century in the first Test against Pakistan shortly afterwards, topped the ICC rankings for Test batsmen.
With this double century, Williamson joined Brendan McCullum as one of the highest double century scorers for New Zealand. Williamson also holds the record for the fastest 7000 Test runs for New Zealand. Ross Taylor’s record of 7000 runs in 96 Tests has been reduced to 83 by Williamson. Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is the leading New Zealand batsman to score 7172 runs in 111 Tests. Ross Taylor has scored 7379 runs in 105 Tests so far.
