Last Chance to See Tragic and Adventure Comedies at Latvian Cultural Center: ‘Dievu abols’ and ‘Dangerous Pit’ Performances Ending Season

As the director of the cultural center Baiba Kļava said, the audience is also welcome to both performances, as they will be shown for the last time this season.

The tragic comedy “Dievu abols” of the Liepāja Youth Theater Studio can be seen at 2 p.m. in the Chamber Hall of the Latvian Society of Liepāja, and the adventure comedy “Dangerous Pit” of the amateur theater “Projekts” at 3:30 p.m. in the living room of the cultural center “Pegaza pagalms”.

“The Apple of the Gods” was based on the motifs of the play by Hermanis Paukš and directed by Juras Ločmelis. The director describes it as a story of love, passions and intrigues for his own pleasure – without a reference point for consequences.

“Hermani Paukš’s view of various topics as a playwright has always fascinated me,” said the director, “that’s why I return to this drama from time to time.

The theme touched on in the production seems especially relevant at the moment – the myth of the beginning of the Trojan War, in which the “gods” play with people, providing themselves with entertainment.”

“Dangerous Biruta” was based on the motifs of Aiva Birbel’s play “Armed and Dangerous”.

Director Lelde Kaupuža chose this popular play because the theme of relationships is always relevant: “The play is based on the story of a woman who has decided to meet the prince of her dreams within 90 days. In order to conquer what she envisions, she learns and puts into practice various skills of seducing men.”

The show has been very popular among the audience throughout the season and the performance has been played in crowded halls.

The participants of the regional show will be judged by a jury approved by the Latvian National Culture Center consisting of three theater art experts – theater scholar and critic, associate professor of the Latvian Academy of Culture Līga Ulberte; actor, director, teacher Mārtiņš Gailis; actor and scenographer Andis Strod.

The jury will assign points from 1 to 10 to each production for each evaluation criterion: appropriateness of the choice of literary material; director’s work; acting work; scenography/visual design and overall image of the show.

The maximum number of points that each expert of the jury can assign to the production of a participant of the show is 50 points.

After watching all the shows applied for the regional shows, the jury will nominate the 10 most successful productions for the final of the “Show of the Year 2023”, which will take place at the end of April.

“The show of the year” is an annual performance evaluation event organized by the Latvian National Cultural Center with the aim of ensuring the preservation and continuity of the amateur theater tradition in Latvia and the Latvian diaspora, popularizing amateur theater productions in Latvian society, and motivating amateur theater participants for creative activity.
