Last Chance: Catch-up Exams Offered for Students in Algerian Schools

Schools at all levels are gearing up for a new exam period, offering catch-up exams for students who have just missed their passage to a higher school level. These exams serve as a last chance for these students to progress academically.

In the primary cycle, the exams have been underway since June 18, following the schedule set by the Ministry of National Education. These exams are specifically for second, third, and fourth-year students. Additionally, fifth-year students who failed the skills assessment tests, which took place from April 30 to May 25, are also eligible to take these catch-up exams, which began on Thursday.

The same timetable has been set for high school students in the first and second years of secondary school. These exams allow them to earn additional points in subjects where they did not obtain a sufficient mark, ensuring they meet the minimum general average required to progress to the next level.

The remedial exams for middle cycle students are scheduled for June 26 and 27. According to the Ministry, students admitted to these exams are those whose results are close to the average (4.5/10 for primary and 9.5/20 for the other two levels).

The introduction of resit exams in the national education system aims to limit school wastage, increase the number of students admitted to higher classes, and prevent overcrowding in classrooms. However, this practice has faced criticism from teachers and specialists who argue that it does not contribute to improving the Algerian education system.

Boualem Amoura, Secretary General of Satef, expressed his concerns about catch-up exams, stating that their sole objective is to keep students in school until the age limit set for schooling. He called for an overhaul of the Algerian education system to address these issues.

Furthermore, the first corrections of the Brevet de l’enseignement Moyen (BEM) exams have caused tension among teachers. The results have fallen below expectations, with some subjects having a success rate of less than 30%. Teachers responsible for correcting the exam papers have shared their experiences, with one teacher stating that out of 404 copies, only 101 achieved the average, resulting in a 27% success rate. Another English teacher reported that only 17% of the 404 papers they corrected met the average. Boualem Amoura highlighted that the subjects with high failure rates are French and mathematics.

These challenges in the education system highlight the need for reforms and improvements to ensure the success and progress of students in Algeria.
