The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has arranged an ambitious project for the management of the areas of Las Teresitas beach related to sport, which will take into account the current conditions of restrictions, in terms of distance and safety, imposed by the prevention measures established by the Agreement of the Government of the Canary Islands of June 19, 2020, to face the health crisis caused by COVID-19.
In this sense, most of the proposed spaces are located after the rescue building, as it has been verified that it is the area of the beach with the least influx and density of users, thus prioritizing the use of the beach for users that they are going to carry out a bathing service and enjoy the sea, reserving the area where the highest occupancy occurs at the disposal of said users. The proposal presented today will allocate 9 specific spaces, with a sports area, of 1,110 square meters of occupation in which a Beach Volleyball field and a Beach Tennis field for doubles will be located.
There will also be a space called Multipurpose 1, of 800 square meters of occupation, with a Beach Volleyball field, with an area of dimensions 16 mx 8 m, in which a safety band free of obstacles of 3 meters wide. Along with this there will also be another of similar characteristics, in this case with a Beach Tennis court, with a surface of 16 mx 8 m for the game of doubles. The project will also bring the placement of a Calisthenics park in which the pavement of this will be the sand of the beach itself, as well as another area of 1,000 square meters, of preferential use for schools.
Another bet is the placement of a Water Polo Field as a seasonal facility (from June to September). Two regulatory water polo goals will be installed there, 3 x 1 x 1 meters (width x height x depth) attached at both ends to buoys that will be fixed by a dead weight to the seabed, that area will be installed at the end of the beach, in the area near the breakwater, leaving a minimum distance of 5 meters from it. On the other hand, it is planned to place 10 totems on the breakwater, separated at a distance of 100 meters (approximately 1000 meters of travel) to signal an open water circuit that will be visible by swimmers and other practitioners of other modalities like kayaking, paddle surfing, etc, from both sides of the breakwater.
The material used for the design of the totems is at the discretion of the provincial coastal service to minimize the environmental impact of the signage of this space, so it is proposed in stone or wood that stands out from the height of the rocks of the breakwater.
This attractive project for the management of Las Teresitas for sports will also have a defined space for storage related to the nautical activities themselves and an area for classes on land. Three storage modules are planned in this space, each one with an approximate surface area of 12.20 x 2.40 m, and a height of 2.40 m, located in the dirt parking area in front of the salvage building. Here, a pedestrian crossing will be executed from said area to access 10 of the beach to allow safe transit.
This reorganization of the beach will not affect the activity of water skates, of a recreational nature oriented towards beach users, which could continue in its current location provisionally, until the approval of the Municipal Beach Planning (currently being drafted), moment in which you must relocate according to the Ordinance. It is also guaranteed both the rotation of activities, as well as the provision of a greater amount of free space for beach users, in addition to the activities of vulnerable groups and those of attention to disabilities, which may be located anywhere in the beach, taking into account its peculiar characteristics of the health care of the users. In this way, the activities of the elderly groups and the activities of vulnerable groups will take place on business days and those for disability care, on any day of the year.
In the words of the Mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, today at SER, “Las Teresitas is the lung of the city and these new spaces will provide a new boost for sport in the capital,” he said. In similar terms, the sports councilor of the capital city council expressed on the Radio Club Tenerife antenna: “We are very excited that this project will go ahead, since it was one of the objectives that we set for ourselves since we arrived at the council,” she stated. Alicia Cebrián, who added that one of the commitments that the area she directs has is that Santa Cruz be “a great open space to practice sports and since we are not going to take advantage of the Santa Cruz beach, Las Teresitas, which is what we have proposed and will soon be a reality, “he concluded.
As for the scheduled time for the use of these new spaces, it will be established from 08:00 to 21:00.
