The AIDS epidemic broke out in the early 1980s and ferociously killed many people until the late 1990s in Europe. Unfortunately still very present, this virus continues to attack, always with the same ferocity, where drugs and treatments are more difficult to access. According to the WHO, this virus has already killed 36 million people since its appearance.
In his work “L’Art en Sida”, sum of 900 pages, Thibault Boulvain became interested in the depiction of AIDS and HIV in art between 1981period covering the first counts of cases of the disease and 1997, when we see more and more effective treatments appearing on the market. The map is centered on the West and more particularly on the United States and opens up to a vast political, economic and social history.
Many activists have shown themselves to be particularly creative in shaking up public opinion and the authorities on the subject of AIDS. By the force of their imagination, the history of contemporary art has seen a huge turning point. The performances bear witness to the social upheavals and confrontations that have emerged from this crisis, but also bear witness to the intractable will to fight against the HIV virus.
