The series took place in a Danish hospital, where there are various distorted and geeky characters as well as supernatural phenomena. Two mentally handicapped comment on the events and a slightly ironic touch hovers over the whole story of the Kingdom. It’s both comedy and horror, Trier’s bizarre brought to perfection.

Filming of five new episodes is set to begin next year. The broadcast is not expected until 2022 under the name The Kingdom Exodus. Von Trier, who wrote the screenplay with Niels Vørsel, planned to continue in the 1990s, but then gave up when actors Ernst-Hugo Järegård and Kirsten Rolffes died.
