Lars Veldwijk hears mega suspension after driving under the influence

Lars Veldwijk has been given a fifteen match suspension from the Korea Professional Football League (K League). The South Korean football league punishes him for driving under the influence. Veldwijk, playing for Suwon City, was stopped at 04:00 in the night from Sunday to Monday with too much alcohol in his blood. He must also pay a fine of 3,000 euros.
Veldwijk, who was alone in the car, did not cause any damage, according to the Seoul Gangnam police. Yet the consequences are great for the attacker. The South Korean football organization has decided to exclude him for the next fifteen games, it has become known. He has also been fined 4 million won (approximately 3,000 euros).
His employer Suwon City is also taking ‘disciplinary measures’ against Veldwijk, but emphasizes that his contract will not be terminated. A year ago, the same thing happened to Japanese footballer Takahiro Kunimoto: his club Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors decided to end the cooperation immediately after a drunken drive.
A spokesperson for Suwon City explained the matter to Shownieuws earlier this week. “In South Korea they can arrest you if your blood alcohol level is above 0.03. If it is higher than 0.08 they can take away your driver’s license. Lars had a blood alcohol level of 0.19. I don’t know exactly what that means for his driver’s license. He has an international driver’s license, they can temporarily withdraw it.” 0.19 promille is equivalent to drinking one beer.
Veldwijk left Sparta Rotterdam in January 2020 to play in South Korea, first at Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. After a year he switched to Suwon City, which then played on the second South Korean level. Veldwijk was promoted with the club in his first season, so that he has been active again in the K League 1 ever since. Veldwijk is the undisputed first striker of Suwon, also this season. He has a total of 39 goals and 21 assists in 110 official matches for the club.
